“There is a lot God has taught me about myself, my habits and my character that I didn’t realize were hindrances in ministry.”Īndrew Shiira became The Gathering’s first worship leader in 2016 when the church started a new Honolulu campus called Citywide. Hatchell has preached, been on mission trips, served various DiscipleNows, and helped with church planting in Vancouver, Canada. At Southwestern, Hatchell served youth, college and in church leadership. “Seminary is more than just the classroom education,” Hatchell said. In August, Hatchell begins work toward a Master’s in Divinity at Southwestern. Hatchell began studying at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s Scarborough College in August 2015 and received his Bachelors in Biblical Studies this May. Hatchell served in various ministries at The Gathering such as youth, college, young adult, preaching, worship, sound team, set up, take down teams and staff intern. “I was challenged by my peers, their faith and their understanding of scripture.” “God used The Gathering to humble me and give me a taste of ministry,” Hatchell said. God will use my past to show those like me what is possible through Jesus.” I see a huge need for laborers and I want to do my part. “Growing up, I only knew one person who lived the Christian life. “My lifestyle came out of what Hawaii expects from someone like me,” Hatchell said. Until that time, Hatchell was heavily involved in marijuana, drugs, and a sinful lifestyle. I am thankful that our church’s focus is explicitly Gospel-centered and purposed towards equipping believers to living out the great commission.”Īnthony Hatchell began following Jesus in 2012 as a 20-yearold. Secondly, God has given me a deep burden for the lost. I am thankful for these past five years at The Gathering where God has given me a hunger for reading Scripture purposefully. “God led me to this church to teach me more about His Word. “My time at The Gathering has prepared me in countless ways for seminary and future ministry,” Kaneshiro said. Kaneshiro, whose extended family has strong gospel influence in Hawaii, senses God’s call to return to Hawaii to pastor, plant a church or revitalize a church. Kaneshiro has extensive ministry experience in churches, Baptist Collegiate Ministries, and Hawaii Baptist Academy. We were drawn by the high-level of academia, the strong focus on the Great Commission, and the testimonies of many SEBTS graduates.” “After seeking wise counsel, much research, and much prayer we knew Southeastern was going to offer us the best equipping for church ministry back in Hawaii. “Pastor James encouraged my wife and I to pray about Southeastern,” Kaneshiro said. Kaneshiro’s wife, Erica, and their two young children will join him. John Kaneshiro, worship leader at The Gathering, will attend Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina this August.
